UNEP's Policy and Planning Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
As part of the Policy and Planning Division, the Crisis Management Branch extends UNEP's work to areas of the world where the natural and human environment have been damaged from conflicts or disasters. Specialized environmental expertise is provided to rapidly identify risks to health, livelihoods and ecosystem services and to integrate environmental needs within the recovery process.
The Crisis Management Branch promotes sustainable management of natural resources in conflict and disaster affected countries. The branch's work demonstrates to decision makers the importance of natural resources management as a precondition for sustainable development and as an instrument for peace building and disaster risk reduction. Since 1999, the team has conducted field operations in over 40 countries and works in close cooperation with the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding frameworks of the UN system. This internship position is for a person who will support the Administrative Officer of the Crisis Management branch in provision of administration and finance support services.
The internship is for a duration of six (6) months
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer and overall supervision of the Operations Manager, the Intern will perform the following functions:
Assist in reviewing the terms of references of consultants and Interns for completeness and fulfilment of set parameters before submission to the HR focal point or Administrative/Programme Officers. Ensure that due process is followed in reviewing applications for Internships and Consultancies including assistance in collating all required paperwork for recruitment for onward submission to the Administrative Officer.
Assists in the on-boarding process for Interns and Consultants by ensuring that all required paperwork are submitted to respective areas for action i.e Banking forms for UMOJA, CDL cards, HR Mini master etc. Assist in initiating the paperwork for ICTS actions including emails set up, desk/laptops, phones amongst others.
Assist the HR and Finance focal points in collating and recording certification of work for payment purposes for consultants, filing, tracking amongst others. Help to maintain files both soft and hard copy for contracts of Consultants and Interns including ensuring that the necessary required approvals for each of set of the documents are done.
Assist the travel focal points in ensuring that the staff, meeting participants and consultants travel requests are properly filled and obtain the necessary approvals before submission for further actions.
Assist the Administrative officer in maintaining tracking of various streams of work including but not limited to legal agreements for implementing partners.
Assist the Inventory focal point in reviewing of inventory data constantly and cross checking with data/information generated from Umoja and ensuring that filing of actions related to disposals/write-offs are property undertaken.
Assist in taking section meeting's minutes and thematic/country offices meetings with the administrative Officer and preparing follow up action's matrix.
Any other tasks as assigned by the Administrative Officer or Head of Branch.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study:
1. Background in project management, finance, statistics, Information science
2. Strong interest and familiarity with Information science, data management
Fluency in English. French is desired.
