Delve into every experience you can. The first few months/weeks were difficult for me but the good times ahead are definitely worth the wait! It just takes a bit of time to adapt to a new culture and language but once the basic skills are mastered, the happiness begins! Read Review

KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? This time, I had to share my room with someone else, next time, I would like to have my own room. But the rest was okay, that is, having to share the kitchen etc. I think the best possibility for me to have my own room would be in an apartment.
Personal comments:
The accomodation was old and far away from the university ( 20 minutes walk ), not to mention far away from the center ( 30 mintues walk ). However, everything was clean and worked ( washing machine etc. ). Besides, I liked living in a house with other Portuguese girls. Because of this I was forced to speak Portuguese.

Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Here it is a short list of best places in Coimbra with a short description: 1)TROPICAL: placed in "praça da republica"; is a cafè where lots of students meet to get a coffee or a beer in almost every hour of the day till night. 2)0 Zé: placed in "rua da matematica", is a small place where peolpe meets usually from 22:00 to 02:00 to get some drinks before starting the nightlife. 3)VIA LATINA: placed near "praça da republica",is a disco with good dj's and goog vibrations. On friday electro music with some drum'n bass. 4)QUEIMA DAS FITAS: an event starting on the firt tuesday of may and absolutely to not miss. It's a sort of students festival during one week. The best day is the thursday when take place "o cortejo",a march of trukcs full of students (like carnival) that offer beers and many other alcoolics for free. The city get full of people, children and old men too.

Quality of courses

Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
The courses are véry intensive. Get enough sleep!

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
We didn' t have classes on Friday. I think this would have been better because on Friday I was so tired I couldn' t do anything useful anyway. It would have been better to spread the courses over more days.

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: Portuguese
Was learning Portuguese a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Portuguese
How much did you improve your Portuguese?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
My main objective in travelling to Coimbra was to familiarise myself with the Portuguese language before starting my undergraduate degree in Bristol (UK). Although understandably nervous about not speaking Portuguese upon arrival, living in the country and having to cope with situations immediately helps enormously. My other languages helped a lot too.

EXPENSES
by Madita, Universiteit Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands
Language, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
At home I wouldn' t have had to buy food, because I would have been living at my parent' s in summer. I spent less on accomodation than I pay for my apartment here. I spent less on travel because public transport is very cheap in Portugal compared to Holland.
Food: was more expensive than at home.
Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Don' t buy food at the 'Pingo Doce' but at the 'Mini-Preco'. The last one is much cheaper. Doing something like this is always more expensive than you think. So save some money before you go!

Personal recommendation:
It's good organized, but I think that if you're searching for a good studyin experience to encrease your knowledge, choose another country.

FINAL COMMENTS

Portugal is small and during wee-ends coimbra get empty; so use your wee-ends to visit the country! Both north and south has cities to see and things to do. Not miss Porto nor Lisbon. Portuguese peolpe is wonderful, they usually speak a good english ('cause they see films in mother tongue) and they know how to receive peolpe. They're always ready to help you, to give tips and to show the beauties of their country.
