Universidad de Cantabria (UC)
Universidad de Cantabria, Avda. Los Castros, s/n, 39005 Santander, Spain
Description:
The University of Cantabria is a young public university, created by a Decree passed on the 18th of August, 1972. Until then, university education in Santander was limited to the courses offered by The School of Civil Engineering, established in 1966, and the specialism in Physics in the Faculty of Science, which had been created in 1969. Both the School and the Faculty were dependent on The University of Valladolid. The establishment of Santander as an independent University dates from 1971. Two years later, The Faculty of Medicine was set up, the new Faculty of Science building was inaugurated and The University Colleges of Industrial Engineering, Business Studies, the College of Mining Engineering in Torrelavega and The Teacher Training School were incorporated.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? I feel I would interact so much more with people if I was able to consistently come home to native language speakers in their own environment. A better view of culture through family life is preferable as well.
Personal comments:
I was very pleased with my housing situation amoungst a Spanish family. Many other international students found themselves living in lesser conditions in various apartments throughout the city, which made me appreciate my situation very much. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Well Malaespina is a bar not to be missed, however, they changed the dj recently so it´s not as good. Always start off in plaza Cañadio with the erasmus people and you know you have had a big night out if you end up at BNS (Buenas noches Santander). My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Now I know, why I chose Fh instead of University. the interaction whith the teachers is ways better than in a university.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Well, the spanish students don´t interact in the process of teaching. When the teacher has a cuestion, nobody intent to answer the cuestion except of erasmus students This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
My grammer professor taught us very well. He did some amazing work with the subjunctive form, but more incrediblely, he ended up teaching us all the swear words possible by the simple use of them in nearly every sentence. I enjoyed the Spanish day in and day out, and vastly improved. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Well, I didn't even have a cell phone, so I relied on phone cards. Everything else was either the same or more. I paid much less to travel than I would have in America, though. I ended up spending more on Nightlife simply because I was out more than I am in my hometown. Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Food, Housing: was the same price as at home. Travel: was less expensive than at home.

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
No. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Go there! Cool city. Friendly students. Good teachers. Relaxed life. A beach, surfing possibilities, mountains with snow. Fun nightlife. FINAL COMMENTS
Try to make friends with students from other countries. Don't hang with students from your home country. Find Spanish and Latinamericans friends to really learn Spanish. Have fun! Go out at night. Especially in the beginning. That's when you get to know most people. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
