Description:
The University of Mannheim, despite being a relatively young university, is proud to be able to look back on a long tradition. The beginnings of academic life in Mannheim have their roots in the founding of the "Kurpfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften" (Palatinate Academy of Sciences) in 1763.

With approximately 12,000 students, the University of Mannheim belongs to Germany's medium-large sized universities. The university also maintains contact with over 450 scientific institutions and research facilities throughout the world.

Personal recommendation:
It's difficult to recommend or not recommend this university, it depends on how many courses you need to take, to satisfy your home university. We had to do more than the german students, and that was to much for an exchange students. But I had a lot of fun and met a lot of people, and it's a good travelling centre.



FINAL COMMENTS

Travel: You have to see Heidelberg, only 15 minutes away. Other places that are not far away: Frankfurt am Main, Köln, Berlin, München, Freiburg. Outside Germany: Paris, Strasbourg, Prag, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxemburg. Special tips: Rock Festival: Rock am Ring (Nürburgring) or Rock im Park (Nürnberg) !!

If you are less experienced in stays abroad, go for it!



FINAL COMMENTS

Mannheim is a simple place. This is to be compensated by the University, activities and community. I believe there is no difference in fun w/ internationals between countries/cities; however i.e. Berlin provides more inducements.

Study with other people for exams. Ask germans for advice, but don't let them stress you!

having contact with international students is essential, housing in Wohnungsgemeinschaft (WG : flat between several students) is the best way to do so....

It is important to know that the German system doesn't offer a broad opportunity of courses. Knowing this point, the quality of most classes are outstanding.

My recommendation for an incoming student is to surround yourself with locals, but be prepared to be very independent. Mannheim University does not do much in terms of servicing their students.

Travel: International Office organises trips for exchange students. Visit of Heidelberg is a must. Do not miss it! If you may choose the season, come in summer :-)
