Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL)

UCL, Place de l'Université 1, 1348 Louvain-la-neuve, Belgium
3.96 / 5 based on 336 reviews.
Description:
The Université catholique de Louvain was established on December 9, 1425, by a papal bull issued by Pope Martin V. The University split along language lines as a result of political turmoil in the late 1960's. A law recognizing separate Flemish-speaking and French-speaking universities was passed in 1970. The former remained in Louvain while the latter moved to a new location on the outskirts of Ottignies. This new campus became the town of Louvain-la-Neuve.

Between 1972 and 1979, nine faculties (schools) gradually moved to Louvain-la-Neuve. The Faculty of Medicine chose to move to Brussels (Woluwe-Saint-Lambert), in an area now known as « Louvain-en-Woluwe ».

Belgacom, the local phone company, charges far too much to give you a number, and they charge again when you cancel the line at the end of your stay. Even if you don't phone a lot, you pay every month, and it's quite a lot. Try to live in a flat where they already have a phone ! Local supermarkets are expensive : they're well aware of the fact tat most students have no car, and therefore have no choice : they shop in Louvain. Find friends to go shopping in the surrounding malls.
Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Food: was the same price as at home.
Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
1/ The railway company allows young students to buy 10-journey travelcards called "Gopass", it's a cheap and handy way to discover Belgium. 2/ Food : See 3.

Personal comments:
Beginning: bedding, home appliances, phoning per contract Current: Food Tip: take the postal money dispenser (it´s the only one giving less than 50 euro bills); try to find sim-card that allows phoning cheaply all over the world; don´t buy too much food so that you don´t have to throw it away when it gets bad
