HOUSING
by Stéphane, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Law, International, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: First campus, then appartment
Why? First campus to meet other students, then in an appartment because of better facilities.
Personal comments:
The university itself will not do anything, you will have to go to the CROUS, where you can choose on which campus you want to live. The price is really great (about 120 euro!).

STUDENT LIFE
by Stéphane, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Law, International, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Go to Tapas, this is not a tapas-bar but a bar where you can drink shots, good prices! Jonathan's if you want to hang with the locals and play some bingo (drinks can be won..), Subway if you like (hard)rock, avoid the big disco's in Nice! (too much money for nothing), go to Eze for the beautiful view, villefranche has a nice beach, check out the promenade des anglais at 7 in the morning in the summer..

Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Take as much courses as you can from Piquemal, he's the best professor over there, especially droit international économique is interesting

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
The only thing you have to know for your exam is what the prof has dictated! I didn't buy any books that year and passed all my exams...

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
Speaking the language was a bit difficult when I first arrived, especially in informal social situations. But I made a lot of progress throughout the year and my abilities to both understand and speak the language have greatly improved.

EXPENSES
by Stéphane, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Law, International, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Family
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
Food: I love French food! Phone: Cheap subscription Housing:Cheap campus-room, then a (super)appartment at the beach, every student gets rent support (I got about 100 euro a month!) Nightlife: going out often costs you quite some money, since Nice is quite expensive Travel: I took my car to visit the south of France, Italy and Spain
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was more expensive than at home.
Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Ask rent support! Somethinf else that really sound cheap but saves you a lot of money, is that people in Nice throw everything away (even when it's brand new). I found a microwave, a color tv and a (new!) vacuum cleaner on the street, it all worked perfectly, it's really incredible.

Important to choosing this university...
Academic reasons
KEY:

I wish I had known...
It's important to keep an open mind and to try to appreciate rather than judge cultures that are different than your own.
In my opinion:
Most people loved it.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The University of Nice is not organized in the same way that American universities are. It can take some time and effort to resolve problems and work out administrative issues. It requires a lot of patience, but other than that, I enjoyed my experience in and out of class.

FINAL COMMENTS

Be prepared to spend a decent amount of money if you plan to travel. Relatively cheap flights and hostels are available, depending on where you plan to go, but you can't rely on them for every trip.
