HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: The International House, where 400 students live.
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: At International House again.
Why? Because I knew other places when I was there, and from my point of view the International House is the best place to stay. I have made real friend, and people in general is opened and decent.
Personal comments:
I have had troubles at first because I chose a place through host university, and the place was really bad, so I had to break the contract and find a place by my own. My advice is to visit several places before making a decission. Living in the International House was one of the best experiences of my life. STUDENT LIFE
by Nick, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Goover to the Mission in San Francisco. It's only 30 minutes on the BART, and you can eat excellent Mexican food (at Puerto Allegre on Valencia) or get blind drunk (Dalva on 16th). Also, Place Pigalle in the Hayes Valley is amazing. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
As one of the best business schools in the USA, you're expected to work very hard. Don´t take the investments course unless you have a very good maths background. You will have to do a lot of work in groups, choose your group carefully, you will spend a lot of your time with them.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
When you register for these courses, a proficiency level in English is required, so when I got there I was able to communicate and understand the professors easily. However, my English definetely improved in Oral skills and Listening Comprehension. I was able to use slang and phrasal verbs myself and not so many proper "Oxford-english" words. Besides, and due to my choice of attending a long course, my writting also got more agile, to the point that even back in the evening in my apartment, I jotted down the shopping list in English instead of in my mother tongue!! How about that? ha ha This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
In general, I perceived everything was more expensive but gas and certain american brands that I buy import in Spain. Nightlife and going to the movies is ridiculous, far too expensive for european standards. My appartment was expensive too, but that's what it takes to be so close to campus. I think that if I had had a car to move around in an easier way, I would have eventually saved a bit more. Food, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Travel: was the same price as at home. Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
It was a nice surprise to see that the student card they gave allowed me to step in the public transport for free. They should do the same with the BART system. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Well, not that I know of, I am proud to have graduated from such an excellent school, and boy, being in the San Francisco bay area was like being in heaven... I still miss that place. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Well, if you go there as an undergrad, you will feel somewhat left out, as this is a research/public institution, where the enormous number of undergrads force the faculty to provide less attention. However, as a graduate student, I believe you can get decent attention: nevertheless, the weather, the environment, and the quality of education is one of the best. I do not regret anything about the school, except that at some media like the US World and News Report always rank private schools at the top... Don't believe those crap, as even former president of Stanford lauded Berkeley as a fine institution that is so undervalued by unfair gradings. Just visit there, talk to people and you will understand. FINAL COMMENTS
Berkeley, tucked in the San Francisco bay area, has one of the most spectacular weather and natural environments in the US. The weather is most of the times sunny and cool, and the view of the San Francisco and the Golden Gate that can be seen from the Campanile tower, one amazing icon UC Berkeley, is an unforgetable scene that is embedded in my memories eternal. Yes, the school life is tough, you will have to hole yourself most of the times at libraries and homes and cafes and anywhere you can find a peace of mind to complete your assignments, projects and what-have-you. I cursed the school when I attended for being so indifferent(seemingly) to its undergrads: however, upon graduation and moving abroad, I miss all of that. That is the sign that this is one exceptional institution, and in terms of value, I believe it gives its rival Stanford a run for its money. In any case, I can recommend that school to you in a heartbeat, as my heart always will wonder those engineering halls(was an engineering major), look back on those ego-killing tests and sigh, it really was the good old days.
