I spent less in almost every category because I was sharing the expenses with my roomates or my friends each time we wanted to cook or to travel. For example, when we wanted to travel, we shared a car with 6 people and we would go in cheap hotels on the way. It is also important to note thatr Gainesville is a student city and that all the prices are adapted to that fact.Nightlife was far less expensive than in any other town so that any student could afford to go out at night. Concerning food, it depends if you want to eat healthy food or not. Fruits and vegetables were more expensive than in France but it was easy to eat with a few dollars.

I paid great attention to my budget so I didn't go through money problem. I would recommend to open an account in the host country , especially if you want to travel through the USA or abroad during your stay.

In general I spend more money there because, first, the currency is stronger and life is more expensive there than in France. As I was a foreign student, I wanted to know better my host country. So, with other friends, we travelled a lot around Florida principally but also in New Orleans, and California.

There is alot of cheap stores for food, clothes like "Savealot", "ROSS"... and the best is cooking at home instead of spending alot in fastfoods! It is healthier and a lot cheaper!! and it is easy specially if you live near the university.

What costs a guider in Holland, was about a dollar in the US. And a doller was 2,5 guilders at the time I was there. On the phone I spent less because local calls were free and because people from abroa called me.

Yes, I had to book a new ticket home for $700!!!!! But this was partly my own fault. Cost saving tips: rent a house with people you know instead of a private lease. Buy a car together with friends. Don't go out for dinner too much! If you want to eat good food, that is really expensive. Get used to staying in one club a night instead of the (in Holland more popular) club-hopping.

The exchange rate is very high. Spending one dollar is the same as 2,5 guilders in The Netherlands. Telephone more to keep in contact with friends and family.

Living in Gainesville in terms of housing, food, nightlife and other related expenses is extremely cheap compared to Europe. The good exchange rate between euros and dollars also helped a lot.
