Type of housing: Student Hotel (Medici)
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Although I love the hotel accoms, I did not connect with the other 10 American exchange students living there; so at first, I was really lonely and depressed. But, I met my friends through classes and my classmates. My friends lived in the program-arranged apartments and it was just a better arrangement. They were cheaper, closer to the classes, and easier to meet people and connect with roomates. Plus, there were no laundry facilities at the hotel, and it's not fun dragging bags of laundry on 2 bus trips and through Florence as creepy men leer at you because your bra has trailed out of the laundry bag....
Personal comments:
Apartments were varied in appearance and size, but all the ones I saw were privately owned and all over the city. People were generally happy with their roommate circumstances and facilities. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? It gives me the freedom and flexibility to come and go as I please. It also gives me a personal space in which I can live and focus on my studies. I'm also I very independent person and it provides that sense of independence and forces you to rely upon yourself for living, maturing in the process.
Personal comments:
Any housing offered in Italy needs to be taken with an open mind. Housing in a major city such as Firenze is much different then the housing and utilities we're used to here in the U.S. I thought the location was absolutely amazing, directly in the heart of the city. The utilities and services were exactly what I expected and you're forced to adapt. If you have a low level of adaptability and can't easily adjust to a new culture of living then it could be difficult. You must have an open mind. Why? Being able to live in my own space in a foreign country is absolutely essential to my well being there. I am a very independent person and need to be in control of my situation.
Personal comments:
The only aspect of the accomodation that I found frustrating was the expenses of going through an agency rather than dealing with the landlord directly. Besides that the accommodations were very wonderful. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I loved the independence of being able to choose where to live, how much to pay for rent, do my own grocery shopping and housekeeping, and best of all, being able to choose with whom I could live (as housemates).
Personal comments:
I chose not to live in the dormitory provided by the university. While dormitories are a great place to meet other people, I preferred to independently find housemates and an apartment through a housing agency in the city that regularly assists study abroad students. The apartments they offered were diverse in rent and location, but all were in good condition. My housemates and I chose one each semester that was right in the center of the city. I loved being able to live in the middle of the city hub, without having to rely on transportation to and from the dorms, which were futher out from the city's center. Why? I lived with five other American students. I was taking my third Italian class and improved greatly in being able to understand the language I would have learned a lot more had I lived with Italians.
Personal comments:
The housing was great. I just didn't like my roommates. However, what ever you choose I think living with other students or a family is a learning expirence. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I liked having the independence of my own appartment, not having to be uncomfortable or worry about not coming in late, etc. i would choose to live with Italian people if possible. I roomed with other American girls in florence.
Personal comments:
It was a HUGE appartment in the center of Florence. It was 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a living room, kitchen, dining room, long hallways and a small porch. It was an amazing apartment and fully furnished too! half a block from the main train station (Santa Maria Novella)and right off of Via Tournaboni (the 5th avenue of FLorence. It was found through an agency - whose name was supplied/ recommended by the program. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? It's much cheaper (in my opinion) to find your own housing than to go with a school program's. It's also nice to come & go as you please, and have friends/visitors/family stay over as you like, when you like.
Personal comments:
