HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I like the experience of flat-sharing and think it´s very enriching and useful to meet natives and learn the language of the country. It also allows you to have more independence and freedom, because you have to organize yourself and cook, clean, etc, as opposed to living with a family or in a hall of residence.
Personal comments:
Overall I´m happy with the accommodation I got. But I wasn´t very lucky with my flatmates, because although they were German, I didn´t get the chance to practice my German that much because we barely had contact to each other. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
there was a lovely ice-cream cafe that sold real italian ice-cream and the best cakes I have ever tasted, unfortunately i cannot remember the name on the street it was on but if you went out the main entrance of the university and crossed the road and went straight down the main street until you just pass the asian food shop turn the corner first on the left and you can't miss it. It had a really nice atmosphere and outside as well as inside seating it was lovely in the summer! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
The language of instruction and the local language at my host university were the same. I had quite a few opportunities to practice my German, although English was dominant, because they were a lot of foreign students whose German wasn´t that good. Overall, though, I think my time abroad was very positive for my language and communication experience, and my fluency in German increased noticeably during the stay. I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
I live at home in Ireland with my parents. Therefore don't pay rent or telephone bill! Did good amount of travelling in Germany, therefore spent more there. Food, Travel, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Overall: was the same price as at home. Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Deutsche Telecom is v expensive - I was recommended to use other phone networks - much cheaper international calls. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish I had known the place where the university was located was so small. In the beginning it was a little hard not to get bored and miss home because the town was really tiny and there was nothing much to do if you didn´t have any friends there. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It should be located in a different place. The teaching is really good, but the place is just too small, especially for someone who comes from a big city like me. FINAL COMMENTS
I guess it´s better to go there in the winter semester (unlike me), because it´s easier to integrate with the locals (since everybody is starting from scratch and wants to meet people). This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
