I wish I had known...
I wish I had moved directly to San Sebastian. Instead I took a 3-day excursion with a group form the consortium, travelling around Spain prior to getting into the life in San Sebastian. It was good to sight-see but just made me feel like abn outsider in Spain as I was in a big touristy group of other Americans.

I would recommend travelling as much as possible and doing so without a Eurail pass as I found I saved money and frustration by doing it independently. Also, taking along a Let's Go was the best idea! It was a perfect guide as I went around to new cities. Additionally, an intercambio is such a great way to meet people and learn more of the language. The school sets you up with another local student who also wants to practice English. Great little program to get involved in!

I do NOT recommend flying with Air France, because for sure they will lost your luggage. Moreover you would not receive any your money back, waiting a looong time for your lagguage. The airport in Bilbao is not situated in the centre and you have to be prepared for a 30 minute journey with an autobus. Apart from it,the spanish people are very nice and helpful for forein students, but have some problems with english.

There are a lot of different parts of the university and I just now one little part. They are not yet prepared to have exchange students. You are just left alone and have to be pretty active to find your way around.

Spain is huge and there are lot of things to see. I didn´t have that much time and I would have liked to have seen more. If you go to Bilbao actually you aren´t going to Spain. You are going to the Basque Country. Do respect that. Politics do play an important role there.

The low number of English native speakers among the English philology professors was a surprise to me.

With Ryanair you can fly cheap to Bilbao and take the bus (there's one every half an hour) from over there to Vitoria. On your way back send some stuff by post to avoid paying for extra kilos.

Overall
I lived and studied in Vitoria-Gasteiz, since the translation faculty is located in that city.

In my opinion, as a French student I was pretty dissapinted with the level offeered by the university, because it didn't meet my expectations. Prior to enrrolling at this university I had to pass a level exam, allegedly b2-c1 level, so that when we started the semseter we could develve into the French language at a higer level. Nevertheless, to my surprise the classes were focus on basic grammar for beginers.

When it comes to the russian department, I have to say, that during my time there, the teacher were excellent and I learn a great deal even though we started from zero level.

Besides my dissapointment with the French department, the general level is up to the national standards. The linguistics department is great and Innovative.
