University in Catanzaro already existed in the XIXth century, but it was abolished in 1923. In 1979 it was founded again as a branch of the University of the University of Reggio Calabria, which is in the same region, about 150 kilometers away. During the 1980s the University had three Faculties. The largest, the Faculty of Law, the others the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. The success of these Faculties, whose student enrollement increased steadily, reaching 7300 in the mid-1990s, gave rise to a strong demand for the creation of an indipendent University. Magna Græcia University was officially established in Catanzaro in January 1998.
