Freiburg has many cozy and crazy places to go out at night for such a small town. In the StuSie (student dorms) there's a student-run bar with particularly cheap drinks if you can't afford to go out, or just want a nearby place to play foosball and see your friends.

Housing
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
a room exchange would provide privacy as well as social interaction as it did last time.

Personal comments
the dorm was located in a student village about 10 minutes by tram outside of town, where the university is. Many students live there. This provided a social and convenient atmosphere for living.

Languages
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
my language proficiency level was already pretty good, but it's different when you are forced to be surrounded by the language at all time. Ease of speaking, slang, and fluency all increased, as well as the level of my 'book' German.

find out what the program will provide you with. The UMASS program provided bedding and most of the kitchens were all stocked. Freiburg has many fairs and fleemarkets during spring and fall, which are good sources of 'stuff' for your place.

Academic
Course recommendations
you are treated as an adult here. You are responsible for the information. You can attend lecture, discussions or labs at will. If you know or can learn the material, you can ignore everything all semester and just pass the test or write the paper at the end. The professors aren't bothered by little things, and are available to you if you ask them for help.
