Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
There are no real student residences or dormitories in Athens, therefore there is no other possibility than renting an appartment with some people.

Maybe you should not book your appartment via the university. Consider looking for one yourself (buy Athens News and look in the adds), but keep in mind that you don't have the "key on the door" situation then... I personally know some people who looked for accommodation themselves, and they were able to find a really good appartment in a good area for 400 euro per month (two big rooms, fully equiped kitchen,...) Main problem with the appartments of the university is the cockeroach problem and tricky owners..

Don't go to the Lava Bore discoteque the Lonely Planet guide states, but turn to Exarchia square. Ostria there is really the place to be for cheap beer (no dancing). If you want to dance, look for a bigger club, cause the smaller ones mostly play greek music...

Don't think that everybody in Europe speaks English. Even in the university this is certainly not always the case. Moreover, if your English is quite good, some people treat you in a rather adverse way.

Don't go to tourist places! Prices go four times up! Look out with drinks in bars, because they are incredibly expensive

I wish I had known...
The airport bus is really much cheaper than taxis. Never social talk with a taxi driver, they will just increase the price.

Personal recommendation
Look for some more space. The university is really too small for this amount of people. The library therefore is not silent at all and the cafetaria always overcrowded.

Buy the lonely planet guide of Greece (the latest edition). You really find everything you need from busroutes to prices of different activities. This is really the bible for Athens!
