If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? It is better to live with an American family in order to improve more yourlanguage skills (pronunciaton, entonation,...).
Personal comments:
I lived in an off-campus apartment. I think it was rather expensive for my personal budget. And I didn't like too much its location because it was a ground floor apartment beside the railway road.
