Why? it allows you have everything that you need near you and meet more people.
Personal comments:
i was living in a townhouse on campus and it's like liiving in your own house, you can cook and have your place clean and tidy. But if you have to live in a dorm it is a little more uncomfortable. From my experience, the housing was really good but i guess if i were living in a dorm i wouldn't have the same opinion

Why? The live outside the campus is cheaper but you need a car to go class because there is no bus service
