The best trip I did was over thanksgiving: With a group of international students we rent vans and went to discover the Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal. With enterprise.com you get good deals for the van, and on hostels.com you find cheap places to stay! Read Review

HOUSING
by Pascal, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland
Engineering, Electronic, Individual agreement between EPFL and Carnegie Mellon
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? The student housing is extremly expensive, and the rooms are all shared, what yields a loss of privacy and a lot of diversion.
Personal comments:
The on-campus housing is clean and close from the university, but the space is very small relative to the price paid. Houses and apartements around the university are relatively cheap and easy to get.

ACADEMIC
by Pascal, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland
Engineering, Electronic, Individual agreement between EPFL and Carnegie Mellon
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Take more courses than what you really need, and decide after a week or two which are the ones you really want to follow. The descriptions rarely give a good insight on what is to be expected.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
As an european student, you have to be aware that you will meet a very different system. You almost have to attend all classes, and homework throughout the whole term don't let you take breaks whenever you want.

EXPENSES
by Pascal, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland
Engineering, Electronic, Individual agreement between EPFL and Carnegie Mellon
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Didn't have to pay tuition at host university.
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits:
Eating out is very cheap but rather unhealthy. As soon as you want to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, everything gets expensive though. Calling is cheap using skype or similar services, but mobile phone contracts are far more expensive than the european average.
Travel, Overall: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Telephone, Housing: was the same price as at home.
Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
The university ID let's you use all public transportation for free. The cheapest way of travelling is using the Greyhound bus service, or JetBlue.com for cheap flights. The school offers some trips around Thanksgiving and Spring break.

OVERALL
by Pascal, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland

Important to choosing this university...
Academic reasons
KEY:
Very Important.
Important.
Not really important.
Unimportant.
Culture
Costs
Activities
Campus life
Party / people
Weather / Location
I wish I had known...
Only thing I would have prepared better was my first week: I arrived, had no idea where to go and where to stay. If you can, ask for temporary housing on campus.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
Nothing specific.
