English was not a problem at the university, because students as well as professors were able to speak english. Outside of the university it was very hard to find somebody speaking english. You should basic portugese before you go to Brazil, because otherwise it will take to much time to really enjoy this country! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

If you don`t know Portuguese it`s hard to communicate in Brazil cause almost nobody in the street speaks English. So you have to learn at least some basic phrases to survive. At the university everybody speaks English so no problems. FGV pays for you a language course (Portuguese) at three different levels (beginners, intermediate, advanced).
