The courses taken in the university were in english and all the papers and the presentations shown at the end of each course must be done in english. At the beginning the difficulties seem unsormontable, only after weeks it s possible to feel the difference. No more trouble explaining your theory in front of professors or other students, any problems of communication, also outside university.

Local language is too difficult for a latin speaker. I took some swedich classes, among with some german and austrian students, who learned it much faster than I did. This way, in order to get the most profit of my experience (social and academic) I quit the language course, because it took me a lot of time to study meanwhile. Anyway, through TV and the family I lived with, I was able to basically develop local language and was able to sustain some rudimentar conversation with native speakers.

It has been a great and rewarding experience, Though the language of instruction of my Bsc Degree was English, I still have made a lot of progress. Especially when communicating with people from other regions of the world (Sweden, US, UK, Western Europe, China, Japan...) speaking with different accents different from each other.

If you go to Göteborg to improve your Swedish, I would recommend to take a course in your home country before. It helps if you do not have to start from zero. Problem is that the Swedes speak English perfectly and you need a good discipline to speak Swedish with them.

At the beggining it was very difficult to follow the instruction but my ability to do so improved very quickly. The projects were more difficult because it was hard to be the only one in the group who didn't speek Swedish as their mother tongue. Using English was there for essential sometimes but fortunately everyone spoke it.
