HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? You get to meet other students, there is always something going on.
Personal comments:
The facilities were quite basic but the communal ones were cleaned daily monday to friday. The rooms were a fair size and in a good location for the University and trams into the city centre.

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
McLaughlins - it may be an irish pub but the staff are great and you do get to meet german people there. Also try Ballerman 6 for the German cheesy disco experience but for a more serious night dancing check out Bhaggy Disco and MK2!

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
My german has improved enormously. The best thing to do is to speak as much German as possible and not worry about making mistakes. (Hard I know!) People are very patient and are prepared to help you out. It is easy to fall in with a crowd who speak your own language but try to speak as much german as possible because it is amazing how quickly you improve.

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
The cost of living here is cheaper so I tended to spend less on food and accomodation. The travel facilities are brilliant. The local transport networks are free with a student card and there are really good deals available both for journeys by bus and train. I spent less on a night out in Düsseldorf but tended to go out a lot more than I would at home, so on nightlife I spent about the same.
Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If you have the patience to wait for Deutsche Telekom, get a phone installed in your room, it saves alot of money in the long run. Beware of using english mobile phones abroad it gets very expensive!

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:

Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent

Personal recommendation:
Its big without being overwhelming. The people are friendly, the academic standards are high, the parties are great and the city itself is a great place to be a student.
