HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: A room in a student hall
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? The appartments tend to be nicer, with better kitchen facilities and furniture.
Personal comments:
My room was reasonably small but fine. However, the kitchen facilities consisted of only 8 electric plates between 20 people and two sinks. There was no oven or microwave.

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Nightclubs: Bhaggay Disco and MK2. For a more german but lively atmosphere Ballermann 6. Loads of great restaurants, in particular Acapulco and Miles Smiles. Must see Schloss Benrath and take a trip to Koblenz. Karnival, the locals go mad and its a good chance to relive your childhood

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
At first its a bit nerveracking, but most people are patient. Its a question of just making the most of what ability you have at every possible moment. All the Professors addressed us in German and all the students did too. The main problem is when people find out that you are not German they want to speak your language to improve their skills.

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
An ERASMUS grant
Student Loan
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits:
Food is much cheaper here. If you are a student you get a pass for all the local public transport. The accomodation was much cheaper than at home but then a bit more basic. The nightlife is cheap too. Clubs are usually free to get in but because you can stay out until 5am you tend to drink less over a longer period of time. I spent more on the telephone because I used a german mobile or payphone. It seems cheaper to get a land line installed, especially as they have special rates for students. (Check out one-tel)
Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If you are withdrawing money from an english account it is better to take out a large sum every so often rather than small amounts every few days. This way you incur less charges from your bank at home! If you don't want to carry large amounts of cash with you, open a bank account it is really easy once you have registered with the Uni and the Auslandsamt!

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...

I wish I had known...
How many forms there are to fill in. Be prepared to stand in alot of queues when you first arrive. Its a hassle to sort everything out but it is much easier if you do it in the beginning. Make sure you regisiter with the Auslandsamt, otherwise you may find you are not eligible for some services. Once the forms are all filled in though, its plain sailing! (Ask about Wohngeld, money given to students on a monthly basis to help with living costs!)
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The people are friendly, its not too big or too small and there is alot of support should you need it. The Uni parties are fantastic and the teaching standards are very high.
