This is really a great place if you are a social person. The other exchange students were like family here, you really depend on each other. It is a very small city, and a small school, so you will be seeing the same people every day! I enjoyed this aspect, as I developed very good friendships with a number of people, where in a larger school i might meet more people but not know these people as well.

Travelling from Finland is not so convenient. There are not so many low cost airlines. However there are interesting places which the average tourist would not see such as Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lapaland.

maybe a little bit more of finnish, the greatest thing would have been to be almost fluent to enjoy theater and all te poets who are not translated yet...and of course, to go deeply into the culture of the country and of its inhabitants.

i would recommend the Intercultural Management course, which was for e a unique chance to discuss and debate the problems we can encounter while working with people from other coutries, this was all the more interesting that most of the exchange students are there, and the debate is passionating!

Of course, you should try to enjoy all the travels organized by the students: St Petersburg and Stockholm. But it is really easy to travel around Estonia, Tallin is beautiful ... Going to Lapland remain expensive if you don't rent a cottage for ten... Also, if you come from France, like I do , try to train yourself to respect the queuing system, and try to remember not to cross the street when it is not allowed!! You will be so rude in Finland otherwise!! I'd like to add that I have a lot of respect for the Finnish nation, for the honesty (one of the most amazing thing for me: I forgot my wallet in the compuer lab for a day, and it was still there in the evening!!!) and the respect of the "rules necessary to live togehter"... Last, but not least, i ve neen fascinated with the nature...According to me, there was something between nature and the Finns, that, unfortunately, i won't be able to understand fully one day.

Plan 1: Strinberg Cafe to begin the day with an excellent breakfast on a terrasse (if the sun is shinning) or in a livingroom (yes, in a livingroom an d you can eat in the dinigroom, like bourgeois do. Then, you can eat a very good sandwich in a Pickwick cafe (or something like that). In the evening, Pravda is a trendy place to eat with your friends a good salad, listining good music. Of course, you need to dance so you just go to Teatri (but you need to be very well dressed or to have more than 24). Plan 2 : the day after you sleep til 12 and then a bath or a sauna to clean your skin (you have many places for that, one of them is the Olympic swimming pool in Pasila). A diner at Ostrobotna (maybe one of the best price-quality ratio of Helsinki) a good French wine with a big pizza or rendeer meat. You are then ready to go to the Finlandia Hall and listen Sibelius songs and hymns. After that I can drive you to Henry 13 if you want to dance again.

Course recommendations
The school offers 2 formats of courses: courses during all the semester (once or twice a week) and intensive courses (usually lasting 3 weeks). Although the intensive format may be attractive because you attend the class for three weeks and have the exam at the end, be careful not to have too many of these intensive courses at the same time. Indeed, they require the same amount of study (about 20-25 hours teaching + assignments) in a short time.

The school is very flexible and gives opportunity to students to organize their academic year in a very freely way. Very good facilities at school: computers (one of the computer room is open 24h a day, 7 days a week), internet access, many teachers put the slides of their course on a webpage, weekly school newspaper (social and cultural events + information about courses and exams)... Nothing really seems to need improvements!

Course recommendations
Courses here run in three week modules, so you only take one course at a time. This means they move fast, however you will find that most professors will end up cutting down the amount of work because it is impossible to accomplish a full course in three weeks. Each course really depends on the professor, all professors are visiting from around the world. This can be very rewarding or very fustrating. Grading is typically much easier than in Canada, however it will again depend on the professor.

I really enjoyed the team atmosphere of the school. Most grading is comprised of projects, papers, and presentations which are mostly done in groups. My presentation skills have developed alot, and also I have benefitted from the different backgrounds of group members. So I would suggest they continue what they are doing!

Be prepared in asking advices to people who already went there, just to avoid bad surprises during the first days of your stay, because you will probably get some anyway... but don't worry, everything is going to be OK and this stay will be the best experience of your life !! lot of fun and memories !!

These stays are a great experience to visit countries and to meet different people. In Finland for exemple, Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Lapland are places easy to go and fantastic. There are people from all over the world to meet and to learn from, Europe of course but from North and South America as well.
