Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin, Germany
Description:
The university was founded in Berlin in 1810, and the foundation concept of Wilhelm von Humboldt gave it the title "Mother of all modern universities". This concept envisaged a "Universitas litterarum" which would achieve a unity of teaching and research and provide students with an all-round humanist education. This concept spread throughout the world and gave rise to the foundation of many universities of the same type over the next century and a half.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? While living in the Campus was great since it offered the opportunity to meet other students, living in an apratment with natives is probably the best way to get to know the country, language and culture
Personal comments:
Berlin is a huge city. It was very helpful to get a room arranged by my host university before I arrived there. Of course, some points (as the cleaness, location) were different from the standards in Switzerland but in general I was very pleased with my (big!) room. Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
There is sooooo much to do in Berlin - where to start?! I loved Prenzlauerberg - Eckstein for lavish breakfasts after nights on the town. Kreuzberg was also very cool in a different way - often randomn cultural events take place in Victoria park. Otherwise, I was barely in the same venue twice - there was so much to do! My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Try not to get carried away with taking obscure courses as the teaching methods are different and you tend to learn more if you have a basic idea about the subject previous to your arrival.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Initially it was very unclear what Humboldt University required of their Erasmus students. A better breifing for both the exchange students and the recieving lecturers would help. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
I spoke absolutely no German before I arrived in Berlin, but as with any language, hearing it spoken 24-7 helped immensely, and I'm sure that needing to use German on a daily basis contributed significantly to my progress in speaking it. Most people I came in contact with were patient with me if I had to struggle to communicate, and after a while the struggle eased up a bit. Living in Germany gave me so many more opportunities to travel throughout Europe. One can't travel or live without spending money. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Food: was the same price as at home. Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
cell phones are good, allow people to get intouch with you anywhere, not too expensive either. Look for the special numbers that the phone companies have that give you special rates to the US, they are definitely worth it. It's much cheaper to call home than it is for people in the US to call ther This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Dont worry, Berlin is so cheap any administrative nightmares (ie accomodation) can be sorted out on arrival. Get Angemeldet immediatly, you are not a human without an "Anmeldebescheinigung". It is a prerequisite for: bank account, registration at uni, telephone and most other essentials. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Dont expect luxuries or support from the Uni, get on with it and you will have the time of your life. FINAL COMMENTS
