Szeged is ideal for travels! Serbia is one hour away, Romania too. From Budapest (2 1/2hrs) you can go directly to Vienna, Bucarest, Belgrade, Crakow, Split,... by train or bus. Travels within Hungary are very recommended as well, this country is just beautiful - and with a hungarian student ID you travel as cheap as most of you never did before ;) Read Review

József Attila Tudományegyetem review by Andreas

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Enough place for other students to live with. If you want it quiet, you can have it quiet. If you want to have a party, you can have one.
Personal comments:
The costs are pretty low, in gerneral I would say it is about 2 3rd of the normal accomodation costs compared to a student city in Germany. It is very rare, but it happens: some of the land-lords are not quite honest. Check the contract (and if possible the reputation) of a land lord with a local.

Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Szote Club, Jate Club, Music Cafe (WLAN for free!), Zaccs Cafe (stylish, worn down post communist style).

Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Personal comments:
A broad variety of "Lern Hungarian"-courses were offered. The teachers were mainly young, motivated and excellent in their jobs. To communicate with the locals was 50/50. The younger generation could speak appropriate english, the ones who grew up in the communist area could only understand Hungarian (sometimes German) - but in almost ever everyday situations the "hand-and-feet"language worked pretty good.

The average costs are much lower than in Germany. Only in food i had almost the same expenses, because I always went eating in the restaurants.
Food: was the same price as at home.
Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
A hungarian student card cuts train travels by 66%! Students travel cheaper in 1st class trains than in 2nd class! (Szeged - Budapest, 2 1/2hrs => 4 Euro!).
