The university has its origins in Finland's first teacher training college, which was founded in Jyväskylä in 1863 and which was also the first Finnish-language institution of its kind. The Teacher Training College became College of Education in 1934 and received university status in 1966.

Because the food was imported and because finland has got one of the highest purchase power in europe, so the cost of life was high as well. Food, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Travel, Nightlife: was the same price as at home. Housing: was less expensive than at home.
