HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I would choose to live near where I was placed this year.My accomadation was a very central location with a distance of only ten minutes from the Uni any ten minutes from the city centre. It was indeed an absolutly ideal location.
Personal comments:
This year I lived in a house with one spanish and one bosnian girl.Apart from the fact that it was great to meet new people I learnt about different cultures as well not to mention a little of both their languages too.My rent was very reasonable and my landlady was very good to all of us. STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
An absolute must in summer in Graz is parkhaus-this is a bar in the Stadtpark where you can listen to some funky music and meet lots of people. In winter I spent most of my time, surprise, surprise in the irish bars in the city centre.Really though you can meet very nice people here and really enjoy yourself. There is noone better than the irish for partying..I believe that more after this year than ever before. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
THe problem I found was that all Austrians spoke very good english and that usually when I spoke in german to them I was answered in english. This was quite an annoying thing and I really had to persist in speaking german even when I was answered in english.
