Final comments
If you are thinking of coming to Graz, then do so because: 1.you want to visit/get to know central europe and Graz is a good base. 2. you are fascinated by provincial Austria 3.you love hiking in the mountains. Don't come to Graz if you want your year abroad to be 1 terribly exciting 2 an intellectual/cultural/social education. If you want the latter, go to Vienna.

Academic
Course recommendations
Choose as many as possible at the beginning so that you can drop the ones you don't like later on in the semester. Otherwise you can end up being stuck in boring or badly organised courses which you have to finish to get the required points for each semester

Personal comments
It would be a good idea for students from British universities coming to study in Austria to be prepared for two semesters of near total academic freedom. It can be disorientating and lead to unproductiveness for those used to more supervision.

Personal comments
I was fluent in German before coming to Austria, but had not had to deal with the thick difficult style often used in academic literature here, which meant reading texts and writing papers took me longer than it does in Englad. It was not always easy for me to understand the Styrian dialect.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits
I spent less for most of your 'expense categories' as most things here are a bit cheaper than in england. I spend more on telephone bills as using the telephone is more expensive here than in England. NAd I did more of it. I only used public transport her to go on short holiday as I lived very close to the university and the centre of town in Graz

Personal comments
My very inventive cost saving tip is: don't use the telephone and don't eat smoked salmon. Also, don't buy too many things.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Because living in a shared flat meant that I was surrounded by Austrians, not by other Erasmus students as might have been the case had I stayed in university accomodation

Personal comments
As I was living in a shared private flat, I only have second hand experience of the actual university accomodation in Graz.
