New York University (NYU)

New York University, 70 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012, USA, New York City, United States
4.14 / 5 based on 72 reviews.
Description:
New York University is unlike any other institution of higer education in the United States. Our Washington Square campus is not a walled-off enclave, it is part of New York City, and the exchange of energy between the campus and the city is palpable.

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Very interesting to be in the center of things, close to the library and to various other facilites.
Personal comments:
Very expensive on-campus housing, mostly studios that you had to share with a stranger. You could not arrange that from abroad and there were no specific accomodations for foreign students.

Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Just about any café in the East Village was a lot of fun. I love NYC, so it was a wonderful overall experience.

ACADEMIC       3.0 / 5
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
I studied in a very small department, the Comparative Literature Dpt., so it was rather limited in terms of courses. Since I came in with an M.A., I had to take all course requirements towards my Ph.D. within that department.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Not really, any Ph.D. program is a somewhat grueling process.

Personal comments:
I became an expert in New York Yiddish slang it seems, which is a true sign of acculturation.

I wish I had known...
How tough things could be in NYC.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
Like for most things in NYC, you need to be a go-and-getter. Don't expect that the University will cater to you, you need to make things happen for yourself (jobs, apartment etc.).
