If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I had my own space, the appartement was nice and I lived together with US-Americans what made me get to know their cultural background, their habits and I could improve my language skills.

For me it was no problem to talk or express myself in English either inside or outside class! What I had to get used to was the "Southern Slang" as well as my roomies' slang who were all African American! But I learned a lot and had a rellay great time with them as well as in class and with the other exchange students. I definiteley improved my language skills. It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
Especiall healthy food was more expensive than it is in Austria, as well as the phone since I had to buy a phone card instead of having a contract with a company what is usually cheper. I also travelled more than I would back home in Europe. Nightlife was definitely cheaper than in Vienna. Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.

Personal recommendation:
Don't expect university to help when it comes to travelling or anything else. You must take initiative. If you're into independent planning you'll love it, otherwise better choose a different place. FINAL COMMENTS
