Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
My German was not great when I arrived in Bamberg. But the German as a foreign language department was very good and with all the socializing I did, my German was actually pretty fluent upon departure. But this only happens if you spend a whole year abroad. It takes about 5-6 months to get used to the concept. After that is when your language improves. Bamberg can be a bit tough because of the dialect, but the dialect actually is a conversation piece when you don't understand the locals. They often want to enlighten you on Franconian!

If you were willing to make the effort and separate yourself from your own countrymen, could speak the local language all day, ensuring huge improvements.

Takes time to adjust to the accent and pick up the slang lingo. Complex economic lectures were hardest to understand
