HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? I lived off campus with other American students. Living arrangments were fine, but I didn't go to Austria to hang out with a bunch of Americans, which is pretty much what I did. Living on campus would provide more opportunity to meet local students and learn the language.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Austria is probably not the best location to learn German. Austrians and Southern Germans speak with a distinct accent that can be difficult to comprehend. As great a city as Salzburg is, I would not choose it again to learn German. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Personal savings Government assistance Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
I spent more on travel because I was in Europe, of course! I wanted to see as much as possible. Travel by train was affordable, accessible and convenient. Travel, Nightlife: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
I broke my leg skiing early in the semester and wound up in the hospital for three days and in a full-leg cast for three weeks. Luckily, it was all covered by the health insurance required by my program. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I would have "shopped around" more, compared programs in other places, sought out more opinions from others who had studied abroad. I learned a lot, but wish I had known some of it before I left. All in all, though, it's an experience I wouldn't trade for anything! In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Salzburg is a beautiful city, but if I had to do it over again, I would choose a larger metropolitain area. Salzburg is a little too quaint, too small to provide many of the experiences of a larger city. Since I wanted to perfect my German, I would also choose a school in the central, north or east of Germany where the language is spoken more clearly. FINAL COMMENTS
Ernest Hemingway said, "If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, you can take it with you. For Paris is a moveable feast." Salzburg is, too! Studying in Europe was one of the best experiences of my life. It's not for everybody. Many people don't want to be so far away for so long. But for those with the "Wanderlust," it can't be beat! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
