Very cheap (155€/month). Very difficult to get a room, be sure to book REALLY in advance otherwise you may not find a place there, and trust me: that's The place where you will want to be.

I studied italian 6 month before going to Italy, and for a person from a latin country (Portugal, Spain...) I think it's enough. For the other I'd recomend 1 year at least.
