Personal spending habits
England is very expensive! Especially in county of Surrey (where the school is). The exchange rate was 2.3 canadian dollars to 1 pound when I was there; this certainly didn't help things. It was worth the money though.

Before going I knew it was going to be expensive... just be prepared to spend a lot on just about everything. It is fairly easy to get a job on campus if you need to make extra money, I worked at the Student's Union bar which helped me out quite a bit.

Coming from the North American university system, I must say that I found it difficult to adjust to a system that has 100% finals in most courses... I find that this puts a lot of pressure on a single exam. Otherwise I have no complaints about Holloway's academics which actually were very good.

I loved it, I had a great time and made some great friends. Definitely go there if you like a small university with a community atmosphere but still want to explore London.

Final comments
Make the most of your time there! Because it is a small university, getting involved in Campus life is a must!!! Right from the start, join a lot of clubs at fresher's fair. You should also make an effort to go to London (and elsewhere in England and Europe) as much as possible!

Communication was in my mother tongue. I did take a few Language Center courses (in Spanish) and found these to be excellent.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Residence is the most cost-effective option even if it is somewhat pricey. This is because housing prices in surrounding Egham and Englefield Green are steep. Overall, I found the residences at Holloway quite good in most respects except cleanliness, but avoid Athlone and Cameron halls which are inhospitable to say the least. However, they are slated to be replaced in the near future.

When choosing residence, I found Founder's to be a great choice due to the splendour of the building and the large rooms available there. It is also great residence in which to meet other students and to make friends. The facilities in Holloway, however, are lacklustre, the main problem being inadequate shower facilities. Also, if you do not like to share common facilities (kitchen/washrooms) and if you would like to cook for yourself, Runneymede is a better choice.

The Students Union is quite good and it often has good events organized. There are few other choices though, save a few pubs in nearby Englefield Green and a couple pricey night spots in Windsor. One can always take a train into London (40 minute journey), but that is somewhat costly and the last train back is at 11:30pm... but you can always take the first morning tran back which if I recall correctly, leaves at 5:30 or you can stay with friends in London. It should also be noted that most students go home on Saturdays and Sundays which can make it somewhat dull on weekends unless you actually do go to London.
