Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Personal comments:
I found it difficult to learn German. Most Germans speak excellent English, and my studies were all in English. I was only able to take one semester of German due to time/money constraints. Schiller graduates must achieve at least an intermediate level in a foreign language, and I had already chosen Spanish due to previous studies. If you make an effort to study and practice, you can learn it. I was too involved with my English-speaking fellow students.

Travel: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
No real surprises, except the desire to take a trip every weekend to somewhere nearby. It is very convenient to travel from Heidelberg, and there are endless attractive and accessible opportunities.
