HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Part of experiencing French culture is dealing with Parisian landlords and living in one of the many 'historic' buildings. Even though landlords might be a hassle, it is a genuine part of parisian culture, and much better than living in a stereotypical dorm facility.
Personal comments:
The university does not help students find housing, however I did not find it difficult to locate an apartment. Students should allow themselves around 2 weeks to look for an apartment. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
In general, sciences po is a very demanding university. On the bright side, teachers do give consideration to the fact that you are an international student. The local students don't though. Courses are very competitive but at the same time very challenging. I would recommend Economics with Dominique Strauss Kahn as a lecturer. He is amazing. However seminar teachers are not equally agreeable and the specific course needs a lot of work!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
In general science-po is doing really well catering academically for international students. I just think that teachers in the specific institution should give some credit to international students even though they do not come form the french system of education. This would make life easier for international students. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Comparing my experience to friends who went to other universities in the Erasmus context, Sciences Po seems more difficult. They have an expectation of a high level of proficiency in the french language before you come over. It is not seen as somewhere that teaches the french language as such. You go there to learn the Sciences Po method of doing things, to open new fields of academic interest etc. Being relatively fluent in the language is almost taken for granted by the university and those that dont struggle a small bit, although this is only in the first months of "acclimitisation". EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Socrates Grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
In my case, even though Im Greek, my home would be the UK since that's where my home university is. London in general is much more expensive than Paris especially foodwise. In Paris you can have a really good meal without paying a lot of money. Whereas in London you can pay a lot of money and still eat really badly. I paid more on telephone in Paris since most of my friends where in London and my family in Greece. As far as nightlife is concerned, Paris is less expensive and if you live in a central location you rarely need to use taxis. In London nightllife is really expensive and taxis are a factor that make it so unbelievably expensive. In the case of travel, the reason why I spent more in Paris is because I actually travelled more during my year abroad. Paris offers you the opportunity to visit many places by train and also in very good prices. I visited Switzerland, Spain, Holland and also the South of France and Corsica. Travel, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Overall, Housing: was the same price as at home. Food, Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
In paris you can get a percentage of your rent back from the government when you are a student. However, your landlord must agree to sign the papers in order to do this which means that he has to be legally renting. So before renting a flat you should ask if they are willing to sign the relevant papers. Also, when you are a student in Paris you can get the card IMAGINE-R which gets you cheaper metro tickets. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I can't think of any "bad" surprises - I have a friend who was in an exchange programm the year before me and she gave me a lot of insights - so, not there isn't anything. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Although the university building is rather old and they have some room problems, it has a very nice location (being in the middle of Paris)! Further the social activities at Sciences Po are amazing - sport, interest groups, parties ,... (you name it you can do it!). Last but not least I also have to say that a workable knowledge of French is really important -> learning it from stretch would be REALLY hard! Most professors kindly take into consideration that it isn't the first language, but there are some who don't!!! FINAL COMMENTS
Paris is a wonderful city - whatever interests one has it offers you something! I love traveling and I thouroughly enjoyed myself, since you can go pretty much everywhere for an affordable amount of money (especially when you are a student under 25!) Being student offers a lot of other advantages (e.g. the "Imagine R"-ticket for a year of transportation around the Isle de Paris or a cheap one-year-ticket for the Louvre). Finally I want to recommand to all movie fans (like my self) a subscription with one of the major movie theater - chains (it allows you to go in any performance, in any movie theater of the chain for one year) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
