Russian is difficult to learn and more difficult to use. Russians speak very fast and expect everyone to speak Russian. Hardly noone outside the main tourist areas speaks English.

Basic things for life are pretty cheap, but even small things of "luxury" like fresh fruits are often more expensive than at home.

No surprises. Banks charge quite high fees when you withdraw money from cash dispensers. For phone calls, Skype is the best solution, otherwise it is quite expensive.

More privacy and space for your own. Dormitory rooms were always for two people.

One has to get used to the dormitory systems. Doors are closed over night and there's no in and out, except you have a deal with the guards.
