Communication with local students was difficult as you mainly get to know other Erasmus students. People definately encounter initial problems understanding lectures but once you get use to their speed and accent...you´ll be alright.

Personal spending habits
Coming from London...mostly everything was cheaper. However, you travel a lot more as you want to know other parts of the country. Also, you tend to spend more on your social life...at the end your expenses are more or less like in London.

Do not arrive too early as competition for accomodation is tough...you just end up with paying too much for hostels and other temporary accomodation.

I wish I had known...
Bureacracy = University...wish I had known that before. It is a struggle even to register for courses. It is very decentralised and obtaining right information is difficult.

Final comments
Around Madrid are several day trips destinations: El Escorial, Segovia, Toledo, The Sierras...also cheap bus services to any point in Madrid. Take the AVE to Sevilla...only take 2hrs.

Nightlife around Chueca area. People tend to visit several places in one night. So do not wonder if one place is empty...it´s most likely to fill up after half an hour. In general, nightlife is great in Madrid. Plenty of locations and events from cheap to tremendously expensive...

There is none. The university provides lists of free rooms or flats, shared and none-shared. Other than that, do not expect any help.
