The university is outside Madrid so when you chose to live in the student's residence you also live outside Madrid.

Personal spending habits
Telephone: its expensive. You never phone nowhere for 1 ct a minute like in Austria. Normally its 15 ct a minute. Housing: Rooms in shared flats are really expensive in Madrid. Nightlife: Drinks and going-out are usually cheaper than in Viena but when you go out more your expenses are the same in the end. Travel: I spent more because I travelled a lot through Spain.

I wish I had known...
How difficult it really is to find a good room in a shared flat when you don't speak much Spanish in the beginning.

Travel Tips: The north of Spain in the summer. The south is better to visit at easter. Around Madrid for daily trips: don't miss Segovia, Salamanca, Toledo,... Advice: Always take care of your personal stuff (credit card, money, phone) when your going out. There are loads of pickpockets in the center.

At the university you also have the options to take calsses in English but I would not recommend it. You leran quite a lot listening to Spanish in all your classes. People were very friendly. Group-work with Spanish people so you get to know more people and really learn Spanish.
