Personal comments
use citibank and open an account at home. then you can withdraw money without being charged. Also, i really regret moving out of a nice apartment with 7 spaniards for a smaller less lavish apartment with various europeans because of costs.. make your living arrangements fit your goals, Ie. .to learn spanish, etc. then worry about the money afterwards..

Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.

My level after: At ease in most situations

Personal comments
key was trying to speak as little english as possible. that way you really immerse yourself. This can be a challenge but if you can make friends both international and american who are committed to learning you will do ok.

Personal comments
living away from the university in moncloa, i could easily walk or jog down to the buses to go to school (15 minute walk). I would suggest this area if you are just coming to Madrid as a good place to start living at least for a few months.
