A mexican restaurant by the name of 'Chile Grande' on a street just behind Corte Ingles. The lights in the city at Christmas. The fountain in the middle of Puerta Real. Bar 'Realejo' in the Realejo part of town.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It was a great experience to live with other Internationals speaking Spanish. It was good to get to know the city rather than living outside of it on campus.

Personal comments
My housemates became my best friends out there. It was a great place to relax with friends. It was a great start to my Spanish language skills having to phone up 20 Spanish speakers and ask about their accomodation.

Personal recommendation
The academic experience is not amazing but that's not really important. It's the people that you meet and the beautiful city that you encounter that makes the experience. Don't work too hard.

Final comments
Find 'intercambio's. There are lots of Spanish people who will exchange their Spanish conversation with your English one. It's a way to make great friends as well.

Academic
Course recommendations
I really enjoyed my translation course in the facultad de traductores. I also would recommend the Spanish intensive course that runs in the first two weeks of September at CLM if you don't mind paying a bit to get the language experience started before term.

Personal comments
I went to Spain with no confidence and limited language skills. I spent the first parts being unable to understand people/classes. I came away with a mountain of confidence, a decent accent, a lot more vocabulary and an ear for the language.

Personal spending habits
In Spain everything is cheap but nothing is free (apart from tapas) so mobile phone offers are lacking. I was charged about 15% for 2 months everytime I topped up my phone. I spent more on travel because I travelled more. But it was cheaper than travelling in the UK.

Personal comments
I used 'Telebanco' cash machines which billed me in pound sterling so that my British bank didn't charge me (apart from the exchange rate).
