Universidad de Salamanca (USAL)
Universidad de Salamanca, Patio de Escuelas 2, 37008 Salamanca, Spain
Description:
Since its founding in 1218, the University of Salamanca has had illustrious jurists, scientists, doctors and writers among its professors and students. In 1987 the construction of a new campus was undertaken to satisfy the growing needs of the University of Salamanca. This remarkable material growth that the University of Salamanca has undergone over the last ten years has been accompanied by an even more remarkable qualitative and quantitative growth, both in the number of students and teaching and administrative staff, on the one hand, and in the number of degrees and doctoral programs offered, university institutes and technological centres and services for the university community, on the other.

Each faculty has a pretty substantial book with a myriad of choices to take. My advice is to take your time going to these courses during orientation to scope them out before committing to them. You can buy ready made notes for most courses at the photocopy shops, which makes life a lot easier!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
ERASMUS in Salamanca is not really about academics... you go there for the fun and to improve your Spanish. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

if speaking the language is your priority then avoid spanish cultural courses, such as cinema as there are bound to be lots of international students. literature courses still have quite a few foreign students but are generally well taught and i would recommend if that interests.

Personal comments:
maybe more contact with tutors to clarify points and get feedback on progress. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Don't be afraid to communicate with your professors. They are completely unpatronizing and are willing to help you if you just ask.

Personal comments:
I'm not sure, U. of Salamanca seemed very unorganized at first but I believe now that perhaps that's just they way it works. And it did work, so that's really what matters. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

More guidance on which courses to pick-we were completely at liberty to pick what we wanted which left some people picking easy courses This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Take car when choosing which course to follow, defenitely do not follow one in which the professor makes it clear to you that he/she does not like Erasmus students, it can cost you a lot! Do not choose first year's subjects as they will only bore you very much.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Culture in Spain is different from that in Northern European countries I guess. Prepare to have to run after professors for days (literally) and to take on a servile attitude. The whole thing is slow but everyone is ver nice in the end. Improvements could be made in communications between Erasmus and regular students, we were treated as Spanish students which was highly optimistic as we did not master the language on a level equal to them! Course recommendations:
You don't have to choose your courses straight away which gives you the chance to try out as many as you like and figure out which teachers you can actually understand, which ones either care or not whether you're an overseas student- it's definitly worth trying to find out from the other spanish students which courses are better then others
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Concerning the music faculty in particular, I think that this department is in decline, it's underfunded, lacking in facilities and some of the best and progressive professors have already left. I've heard the music dep. in Granada is supposed to be better This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Make sure you have a clear understanding with the professor -- what he or she expects, and what you will be doing to earn your grade. The school system is extremely different in Spain than the US, so be prepared for lots of lecture, little discussion, and little guidance. We didn't even receive a course syllabus, and there were no daily assignments, only suggested readings and a final exam.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Much more professor-student interaction; more discussion; clear daily assignments and periodic tests; much less lecture punctuated by activities to get students involved This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Depending upon the type of program you are in, it could be hard to meet local students. If you're enrolled in Cursos Internacionales, you take classes in a separate part of the university than local students do, however, it is easy to meet other international students through such programs. One thing to do in order to meet local students is to get an intercambio.
