Overall
I wish I had known...
I should have planned to stay longer! Also, I didn't pack enough warm clothing and ended up having to buy winter clothing, which added to my expenses.

Languages
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.

My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
I really liked how the teachers taught us the language. It wasn't so much "textbook" Spanish like what I was used to learning in the Unites States. They would teach us more common sayings and useful phrases that we would use in our everyday life.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
A private grant
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits
Food expense was included in my rent and so I was provided room & food everyday of the week for 129euro. Using a cell phone there was more expensive because i used a SIM card (prepaid card) instead of having yearly plans like in the United States. Airflights within Europe are offered at much cheaper prices than in the U.S. The nightlife in Salamanca is considerably longer, which caused me to spend more money (and the exchange rate).

Personal comments
I loved my housing situation. I couldn't have been happier with what my family provided me and what they taught me. I still communicate with my host mother, Angeles, via e-mail.

O'hara's, Jacko's, El Midievo, The Irish Rover, El Torero, and Potenkim were some of my favorite night spots. I loved to shop and see the women's fashion desplayed at Zara! I had a membership at a gym in northern Salamanca and it was very clean & I loved the 'body balance' classes offered. There were several good tapas bars on Van Dick street, too.
