Spaniards are very nice and forthcoming if you ask them something, in Spanish! Easy to learn and most people were patient. Some loved it to teach us how to speak better Spanish. Overall experience very positive on this point.

Personal spending habits
As an Erasmus student you spend like a madman as you are constantly moving around, phoning home and friends and going out like 6 days a week. Add up a World Cup (football) and you will definetely wind up broke but it is worth it!

Do NOT take Telefonica gsm pre-paid cards, they cost money like water! Take Amena instead. If you are from the Euro-zone, you don't need to open a bank account anymore, if you are from outside it, do so to save on costs to withdraw money from your home account. In Spain, always ask BEFORE paying what the amount is supposed to be otherwise you can get some lengthy discussions!

Personal recommendation
Go to Salamanca to improve your Spanish, meet people from all over Europe and Latin America, but do not be dissappointed by the educational system, it is different and for some old-fashioned.

Academic
Course recommendations
Take car when choosing which course to follow, defenitely do not follow one in which the professor makes it clear to you that he/she does not like Erasmus students, it can cost you a lot! Do not choose first year's subjects as they will only bore you very much.

Culture in Spain is different from that in Northern European countries I guess. Prepare to have to run after professors for days (literally) and to take on a servile attitude. The whole thing is slow but everyone is ver nice in the end.
Improvements could be made in communications between Erasmus and regular students, we were treated as Spanish students which was highly optimistic as we did not master the language on a level equal to them!

The accomodation in Salamanca is easy to find and not costly. However, don't think to come by car as in the whole centre you cannot park it and will be forced to live outside it and thus miss some student life!
