Speaking to the locals is the best way to improve your language so try and get involved as much as possible in university activities with students other than the international students

You can get a card from the bank Kutxa and when you put money on it you can use the bus service for nearly half the price - this is open to everyone, not just students

I wish I had known...
Get there early. You will miss out on all the initiation week and meeting everybody who's just arrived, also accomodation is easier to get when you're there early too

Final comments
Buy a bike - it's the best way to get around the city, always ask for the student rate on the bus- it's much cheaper. The basque language is not an issue, people are bilingual and most speak spanish normally. If you are friendly to them, they will be friendly back.

Academic
Course recommendations
We picked optional courses, mainly languages which meant that we weren't with the same class for most of our subjects which made it difficult to meet local students.

Most of the classes are based on attendance - ie- if you attend the classes you won't have to sit exams, which was a great thing for us.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Apartments can be quite cheap if you find the right place. Our apartment was overlooking the beach which is why we paid more than other people €270 per month where others found apartments for €180 per month, but we paid for the location.

Personal comments
The university has a special office which helps foreign students to find accomodation. The best option is to get there early in September when you can take your pick from all the apartments available, we went at the end of september when it was more difficult to find apartments.

The Parte Vieja (the old part) has great nightlife. food and drink are very reasonably priced and most things are within walking distance. Lots of places to go out.
