Because in a foreign country you travel more than usual to get to know the country and for telephone because it is more expensive to phone home.
In Munich the prices for accomodation are the highest of Germany. So it's no wonder that it was cheaper for me.

Personal comments
Telephone in Italy is very expensive. It's better to by an international phonecard in one of the "Tabacchi". With those you can call by pin-code from every telephone.

The best way of travelling is the train. You can get a erduction of 20% on the tickets either with the CARTA VERDE (45.000 Lire only for under 26 year olds) or as mini group (from 3 persons on).
First thing to do after you found a home is to by a bike - the easiest way of transportation in Padova.

SASSA (the accomodation service of the university) was very helpful. You can find a room for betwenn 250.000 and 500.000 Lire. Before choosing to take a certain room you should have a look on the map how far it ist from your faculty and the city center.
In my opinion it is no problem to find a room and if the first chosen isn't the right on you can always change.
