Cost-saving tip # 1: drink lots of coffee (cafe) at the bar, not the tables.
Also, food in the restaurants is only slightly more expensive than the mensa, so take advantage and eat out once in a while...the experience is a great value!

Languages
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
I wish my Italian was as good now as it was when I came back. I learned so much, and I was always on buses, journeying to other nearby towns in order to envelope myself in the language and culture...ot was absolutely the best way to learn Italian.

Overall
I wish I had known...
Yes, I wish I had known that they don't sell Doritos over there! Also, I wish I had pre-arranged a fan, because neither the dorm rooms, nor the classrooms had air-conditioning or fans.
Some days the heat was unbearable.

Final comments
Don't worry about money...just bring one or two ATM cards....I really only brought about $40.00 US, and exchanged for Lire at the post office (best rate). Then, whenever I needed cash, I just went to an ATM - they call it Bancomat.

Can't remember any of them, sorry. But I will say that Siena is beautiful by day, and absolutely gorgeous by night! The town is all about music...music everywhere we went, from opera to jazz. Great place.

Housing
Type of housing: A beautiful, old palazzo, which was a dorm
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
I would love to help an Italian family learn English, and I know they could help me improve my Italian.

rooms were a bit too small for 2 persons, and there wasn't any a/c or fans, so they got desparately hot at night.
