Università di Bologna
University of Bologna, Via Zamboni 33, 40126 Bologna, Italy
Description:
The University of Bologna is about to celebrate its Ninth Centenary. The Studium at Bologna is thus the oldest in the western world. The whole history of European universities has been profoundly influenced throughout the centuries by the University of Bologna. Evidence of this may be seen in the fact that many of the most important universities in Europe were established as a result of internal strife within the University of Bologna, or under the auspices of scholars from this University.

Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? It gives opportunity to seing "real" life in a foreign country, not only students life. To precise, living in apartment obliged you to think about usual daily things, like shoping, cooking, cleaning etc., not only about studies and exames
Personal comments:
I was schoolarship holder of Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, so the campus was covered by this. It was nice typical students rooms for two people quite close to the center of the town. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Own flat is, after all, your own - barring the landlord. Greater freedom, and the feeling that you are a real resident in your new home town.
Personal comments:
I got my flat through a good local friend, and was lucky enough to land in a single room. Many Italian students share their rooms with another person, which I could have personally found slightly inconvenient. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I would have preferred to have lived in the centre of the city because it was very difficult to go out on my own in the evenings; what with being a woman in Italy. Also the flats in town are more convenient when you have 6 hour breaks between lectures.
Personal comments:
Most of it is very very ancient!!!! There is the story of a ceiling falling in on a 12th century apartment...My own personal accomodation was a bit of a concrete block and by March it was infested by ants and massive bugs of an indescribable nature??? Sharing a room was quite trying and it meant coming to terms with not being able to have one's own space...which can encourage you to climb the walls. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Although good apartments are generally quite difficult to locate there are indeed an array of hidden offers within the private sector.
Moreover, the apartments are more expensive. I paid 1200€ a month, with a friend, for an excellent apartment in the historical centre of Bologna. The apartment was truly excellent.
Personal comments:
University halls of residence are very limited. Summarily, I suggest that all students dedicate a week in their vacation to find accommodation in Bologna. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I was so lucky sharing a flat with a french girl a bit outside the center, it was in a wonderfull place, very green and no smog (!) It took a while to get to univ. but I didn't care. Busconnections are perfect, bikes are easy and cheap to get
Personal comments:
In general it seems hard to get a decent place without paying a fortune, come in good time and don't accept anything you are offered. Spending a week or two at a youth hostel will only make you know more people. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Living in an apartment with other people didn't cause any problems for me. In the end, we were like a little family (all brothers and sisters) and that felt just great!
Personal comments:
Rooms in the city centre are quite expensive and most of the time you don't have much space. My appartment was just 10 minutes walk from the city centre and it was clean and not too expensive (250 Euro/month). This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
