Student life
Describe host city:
Student life dominates the city

Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal social experience
Personal comments
Some people ignore student parties, while others ignore bars and clubs. For University residences, I recommend Hadiko; as for bars, Café Wien and Ludwigsplatz; clubs... Carambolage and Krokokeller

Personal comments
Though housing is seldom provided by this university, what they offered me was in pretty good shape and otherwise I couldn't have met "deeply" german people!

Languages
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Quite hard at the beginning to understand them because of the dialect they spoke. German used at the university was more "academic" so to speak, so as long as you know technical vocabulary should be no problem

Final comments
The city is small, everything is reachable within foot or bike distance.
People there can be disappointing. Some locals are really nice, but some others do not show any enthusiasm for foreigners nor exchange students. Nevertheless, as usual, you hang out with international people and just a few locals.
Life in Karlsruhe is cheap, and due to its location in the very center of Europe, you can travel everywhere.
Nightlife is, in my opinion, good when you go to Student parties - clubs here are not Ibiza clubs...
Advice: though shared appartments are pretty cheap, in september there is a fierce competition to get one, when all the students arrive. Prioritize this aspect.
