University of Mannheim, Schloß, 68131 Mannheim, Germany
Description:
The University of Mannheim, despite being a relatively young university, is proud to be able to look back on a long tradition. The beginnings of academic life in Mannheim have their roots in the founding of the "Kurpfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften" (Palatinate Academy of Sciences) in 1763. With approximately 12,000 students, the University of Mannheim belongs to Germany's medium-large sized universities. The university also maintains contact with over 450 scientific institutions and research facilities throughout the world.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: students' hostel
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? It is funny to live in a student's hostel for one year because you get to know a lot of people, but if I had stayed more than one year, I would have rented a room in a flat. Once you know the people at uni, you want to have your own space sometimes.
Personal comments:
It was cool to live with 9 others, there was always somebody in the kitchen to talk to. You learn a lot about different cultures (and how they cook!). But,it was very dirty, too... This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Well, as Mannheim is not the funniest city in the world, you shouldn't miss the uniparties every thursday. Specially the ones in the summer, they take place in the "Schneckenhof" and they are open-air. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Don't be disappointed if you're lost in the shuffle in a German classroom. The atmosphere is very distant and the "business" aspect of Mannheim University is apparent from the moment you step foot into the classroom.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
A greater integration of the university into the student's life, but it's not possible because there is no true "campus" as in the US. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
German is a difficult language to learn and use, but by keeping busy and never letting myself get defeated, I pushed through and have been able to handle myself well in everyday life in and out of the classroom. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
grant from MIBP Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
I live in Barcelona, and it is a expensive city. The night life in Germany in general is a bit cheaper because there is always a day in the week where you can have drinks at a studentprice. Travel around Germany is very expensive if you travel by train. Travel: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Nightlife, Housing: was less expensive than at home.

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
There are no special treatment for exchange students by exams anymore! In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It's difficult to recommend or not recommend this university, it depends on how many courses you need to take, to satisfy your home university. We had to do more than the german students, and that was to much for an exchange students. But I had a lot of fun and met a lot of people, and it's a good travelling centre. FINAL COMMENTS
Travel: You have to see Heidelberg, only 15 minutes away. Other places that are not far away: Frankfurt am Main, Köln, Berlin, München, Freiburg. Outside Germany: Paris, Strasbourg, Prag, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxemburg. Special tips: Rock Festival: Rock am Ring (Nürburgring) or Rock im Park (Nürnberg) !!
