I traveled almost every weekend, I don't do that at home. And the telephone is just darned expensive in Europe. Email is fabulous though.

Final comments
Avoid drinking Paderborn Gold, the local brew. Yuck. Try Warsteiner, it's much better. Shop at Klingenthal, that's where I worked, lovely people. Enjoy as many Schuetzenfests as you can get to.

My overall language experience was great. The classes were in english for my program, but we had a German converstaion class. Plus I lived with a family and had an internship in the city. I was definitely more comfortable with the language by the end of my time.
